Blue sky

I have been diving into _atproto lately.

There are so much to enjoy about it:

  1. 1.

Atproto is a protocol, like the http, the hypertext protocol, that allows you your own identity to be carried across the open web and open social space. You can post, comment, follow others, and you can jump from one application to another. No worries about separate identity creation at each individual apps just to browse and post.

  2. 2.

Using your identity you can browse and post in Bluesky, and then jump in a place such as Leaflet.pub to write your post, and then hop on to Flashes to post a few photos and traverse then entire network with just one identity

  3. 3.

That one identity, as we say "one ring that rules them all", you have one identity that carries through

  4. 4.

Here's how it all works. You start with an account that is tied to your email address.

  5. 5.

    Then you are assigned an identity, the did that looks like did:plc:xxxxx (long string) ;

  6. 6.

There is a way to add a did:web decentralised identifier but that is more involved. If you want to know more about that process, see here, and here is a github repo about it, https://github.com/afternooncurry/bsky-did-web#1

  7. 7.

If you do not want to go with the Bluesky PDS, there are other alternatives. One is eurosky.social , and another is selfhosted.social

  8. 8.

You can also configure your own PDS but that is more involved and you can follow instructions here

  9. 9.

So here is a list of different apps that are really useful to me:

    1. 1.

      Bluesky for social media

    2. 2.

      Leaflet for blogging (this one)

    3. 3.

      Flashes for image hosting

    4. 4.

Wisp.place for static file hosting and flat web

    5. 5.

Pinkleaps for getting a more instagram like experience (works with Mastodon as well)

    6. 6.

Video with Stream.place and check out their download (invitational)

    7. 7.

Another video with skylight.social , check out their app (up to three minutes video)

    8. 8.

      Tangled for code hosting

  10. 10.

You can access Fediverse posts in Bluesky using bridgy. Find out more here: https://fed.brid.gy/

  11. 11.

Everything is open-source and free, so if you are prepared to put some elbow grease, you can come up with your own apps

The list will grow. I have just started exploring the atmosphere. Stay tuned for more. I'd love to know about your experience of using the app in the comments section.
